The Chapel, at Badbury in Wiltshire, was part of the Primitive Methodist movement- a group of Wesleyan Methodists who, concerned that their religion was deviating from its pure Methodist origins, formed a breakaway church in the early 19c. A working-class movement, as well as bringing religion to the poor it was concerned with giving people a sense of self-worth and improvement, education, training and social justice. The movement maintained its independence until 1932 when it amalgamated with the Wesleyan Methodists to form the Methodist Church. The Chapel was disused by the Pendon period and is now demolished.
The Chapel was surrounded by four cottages which were in very close proximity. Roye England began surveying the group in 1952 and was to spend some 6,500 hours in modelling the buildings over the following 12 years.
