Schools in 1920/30 rural England

The prototypes of Pendon Parva’s two schools are from different Vale villages.

The Lower School, at Hinton Parva, Wiltshire, originated from a 1777 church funded ‘free charity school’, later endowed by the Lordship of Hinton and operating from an 1821 built cottage. This was later enlarged to include a schoolroom. The school was closed in 1927 and is now the village hall.

The Upper School is based on an 1859 church-sponsored school in East Hendred, Oxfordshire, which was later expanded and remained in use until 1967 when it was converted to a village hall. It remains in use today, known as ‘Snell’s Hall’.

Hinton Parva School was first surveyed by Roye England in 1953 and later modelled as Pendon Parva's Lower School. Original design drawings for the East Hendred building were obtained and so that this building could be modelled as the Upper School.
