Railways in Transition

Special Opening Weekend

Following on from the huge success of our last Special Opening Weekend Event in 2021, this year’s Special Opening Weekend on the 3rd and 4th December will feature the transition periods between GWR and BR steam services. We will have a Hawksworth and BR Standards, including a Britannia Pacific, Austerity and County hauling appropriate stock in the early post-Nationalisation liveries. We might even have an early Diesel or two!

The event will follow the format of our successful Diesel weekend, with the special services interspersed between our regular Vale trains representing the GWR in the 1920s and 30s. Such an approach gives a real sense of how the railways changed as a result of coming under public ownership, but compared to the evolution of services between 1923 and 2023 it all seems as if little had really changed!

For the 3rd and 4th of December we shall have our normal opening times and prices, and Friends if the Museum will have free entry as usual.
