Chequers Inn is situated in Charney Bassett, a village situated on the central clay area of the Vale of White Horse.
For many years the village was served by two inns, The Chequers and The Horn (which is our next stop). They were situated next to each other and opposite the village green.
The double-fronted Chequers is a thriving inn constructed between 1850 and 1877. In the late 1800s the pub was owned by the Wantage Brewery Company Limited. In 1920, Morland Brewery of Abingdon, a rapidly expanding brewery company, acquired Wantage Brewery and a photograph from that year shows The Chequers bearing the Morland sign.
Later the inn became a locally-owned free house and then In December 2005 it was purchased by Brakspear, a Henley on Thames brewery company and owner of a large number of pubs. It is still owned by them and operates successfully as a leased house.
There are interesting walks around Charney Bassett, some starting at Chequers Inn. One with links to Pendon is to Lyford about 2 miles away. At Lyford are almshouses modelled at Pendon. These were built in the mid 1800s and their exterior remains much as it was then. There is a photograph of the almshouses in the Gallery below. Another short walk is to Cherbury Camp - which was an Iron Age fort.
The Chequers Inn has three en-suite rooms and provides accomodation and a full lunch and dinner menu. Full details can be found here. The postcode is OX12 0EX.
